No scheduled concerts – Covid Consequence
For many years the choir narrowly defined its purpose as providing an annual spring and Christmas concert for the community. This has evolved to include active support of musical activities and education in the community and to add our voices to various local events.
Chantry Singers is first and foremost a community choir. Our schedule includes performing at the Canadian flag in Southampton on Canada Day and at the opening of Pumpkinfest each October. The choir brings selections from our two annual concerts to the three area senior care facilities and to the Day-Away program. The choir’s annual Service of Lessons and Carols at Christmas receives a freewill offering, often over $1000, which goes to support the Women’s House Serving Grey and Bruce.
A special recent highlight was our 2018 Fall concert where we joined with the Stratford Concert Choir under the direction of Ian Sadler for a performance in Stratford on November 10th and in Port Elgin on November 11th. This concert honoured the 100th anniversary of the World War 1 Armistice and featured John Rutter’s Requiem, songs of World War II and related works. View the Concert Poster here.
In 2008 and 2017 Chantry Singers was a representative of the province of Ontario at the Unisong festival, a Canada Day choral celebration at the National Arts Center in Ottawa. The choir has also performed in Waterloo, Cambridge and Stratford with local choirs.
Internationally, Chantry Singers hosted the Edwin James Festival Choir from Littlehampton, Sussex, England in 2012 for local concerts and tours of Grey/Bruce. In 2015 Chantry Singers reconnected with the EJFC in Littlehampton, England to perform a joint concert there. The choir then went on to tour England, performing two more concerts and several impromptu performances. In 2018, a sizeable group of Chantry Singers members joined with choirs from London ON for a performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria at Carnegie Hall, New York.
